About the Project

The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) will extend the TTC’s Line 1 subway service approximately 8 kilometres from the existing terminus at Finch Station into the City of Richmond Hill. The project runs through the City of Toronto and York Region, including sections within the cities of Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. It will include an approximately 6.3-kilometre tunnelled segment as well as an above-ground segment that will run along the existing rail corridor in the northern section of the route. Once complete, the YNSE will connect with local and GO transit services.

The Yonge North Subway Extension is one of the priority transit projects announced by the Province for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and the Hamilton LRT.

The Yonge North Subway Extension is to be delivered in separate procurement contracts:

  1. The advance tunnel between Finch Station and Richmond Hill.
  2. A separate contract to construct the Stations, Rail and Systems.

Demonstrating Value

  • The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) Advance Tunnel project is being delivered using a Design Build Finance (DBF) model. Key benefits of a DBF model include significant risk transfer to the private sector over the life of the project agreement, greater cost and schedule certainty and greater potential for design and construction efficiencies and innovation.
  • Based on precedent project experience, a DBF procurement model typically has delivered a value for money savings in the range of 10% to 15% compared to undertaking the same projects using traditional delivery models.
