About the Project

The new South Niagara Hospital will be an integral part of Niagara Health’s connected healthcare system. The South Niagara Hospital will be located at the intersection of Biggar Road and Montrose Road in Niagara Falls, Ontario, just off the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). The new South Niagara Hospital project will centralize services from existing facilities, making it easier for residents to access the care they need at one location, provide an overall better experience, and enable communities to be healthier. Niagara Health’s new site is being planned with a seniors’ focus embedded into all aspects of the patient experience.

The new South Niagara Hospital will be a full acute care hospital that will include:

  • 24/7 Emergency department, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services; as well as medical, surgical and intensive care inpatient Beds;
  • Ambulatory Services as well as post-acute Complex Continuing Care (CCC) Inpatient services;
  • Centres of Excellence specializing in stroke, complex care, and wellness in aging.
  • Designed with the next age of innovation in mind. The South Niagara Hospital will seamlessly integrate technology that supports high quality healthcare, where technology recedes into the background so patients can focus on recovering and healing.

Community And Green Benefits

The new South Niagara Hospital will be designed and built to meet the Canada Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards. In addition, the project is working toward being the first WELL®-certified healthcare facility in Canada focused on the health and well-being of staff, physicians, volunteers, patients, families and caregivers and the Niagara community.

The new hospital will be consistent with the Ministry of Health's high standards for patient and family-centred care, incorporating principles of senior-friendly design, accessibility and infection prevention and control.

Demonstrating Value

  • The South Niagara Hospital project is being delivered using a DBFM model. Key benefits of a DBFM model include significant risk transfer to the private sector over the life of the project agreement, greater cost and schedule certainty, greater potential for design and construction efficiencies and innovation and higher maintenance quality encouraged through performance-based service payments over the 30 year term.
  • Based on precedent experience, a DBFM procurement model typically has delivered a value for money savings in the range of 15% to 22% compared to undertaking the same projects using traditional delivery models.
