About the Project:

  • To offer a safe, secure and healthy rehabilitative living environment, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services constructed an innovative detention facility to accommodate youth in detention and/or serving secure custody sentences.

Features

  • More than 161,000 square feet of new space and 45,000 square feet of renovated space
  • A new 192-bed, campus-style complex divided into small units
  • Eight new residential and two renovated buildings
  • Separate buildings for administration, multi-faith worship centre, education and recreation

  • Innovative features such as: 
    • Smaller 16-person units
    • Improved sightlines for youth service officers
    • On-site classroom facilities for education
    • A new rehabilitative centre

Community and Green Benefits

  • Design features conforming with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Canada Green Building Council's standards.
  • Site designed to preserve existing trees and to provide screening to the facility.
  • During construction, up to 90 per cent of job site waste was salvaged or re-used.
  • Alternative energy vehicles were used to transport construction workers on site.
  • Use of environmentally friendly building materials.
  • Ultra-low-flow plumbing fixtures and waterless and dual-flush toilets were installed to reduce water consumption by 20 per cent.
  • The project was designed for efficient use of resources during construction and once operational.

Economic Benefits

  • Job creation for an estimated 100-150 workers who were on site daily during construction.
