TORONTO -Infrastructure Ontario (IO) is proud to be the first government agency to join the League of Champions safety initiative as part of its continued effort to demonstrate leadership in the area of health and safety.

Earlier this year, the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) and MySafeWork, a not-for-profit organization and registered charity, teamed up to promote safety for all workers in the province.

At the OGCA Safety Awards event in Mississauga. Rob Ellis, leader of the League of Champions, and Clive Thurston, President of the OGCA, presented Lawrence Quinn, Senior Vice President from Infrastructure Ontario, with IO's Team Canada jersey. The jersey is symbolic of the commitment to working with industry to make safety a priority for everyone.

To raise the bar on safety, IO has phased in enhanced performance requirements on all of its larger construction projects.  For example, the Certificate of Recognition (COR) occupational health and safety accreditation program is being implemented as part of a broader construction safety strategy.

Quick Facts

  • Effective September 1, 2016, COR is mandatory for major projects (generally over $100 million) using the Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model
  • Effective spring 2017, companies will need to demonstrate they have applied for COR certification for traditionally-delivered real estate projects (over $10 million)
  • Effective spring 2018, COR will become a mandatory requirement for these traditional projects
  • For demolition projects, IO has adopted the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) guidelines
