Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of the Solicitor General announced today that Bird Construction Inc. has been awarded the contract to design and build expansions at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre and the Kenora Jail.

The expansion will help support increased access to literacy, skills development and technology programs that support safe community reintegration. This investment will also help address overcrowding at both facilities, including during construction of the new Thunder Bay Correctional Complex.

Bird Construction Inc. was selected as the successful proponent as the result of a two-stage competitive and accelerated process. In the first stage, a Request for Qualifications and Standing Offer (RFQSO) was issued to establish a list of firms with demonstrated ability and experience in rapid delivery construction projects and mandates. In the second stage, shortlisted firms from the RFQSO were invited to enter into confidential meetings and negotiations, concluding with the contract award.
