Hospital celebrates the structural completion of facility

Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain, joined hospital officials today for a tour of the Henderson General Hospital construction site and to celebrate the structural completion of the hospital's 425,000 square foot redevelopment.

MPP Aggelonitis received a guided tour of Level One which includes a new, 64 per cent larger emergency department and learned first hand about the development from workers on site.

Construction of Henderson General Hospital's first phase of redevelopment began in February 2008 and is on time and on budget to open its doors to patients in summer 2010.

The hospital's expansion will result in enhanced general hospital services, including a full-range of acute inpatient and ambulatory services supporting cancer care and patients from the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Additional oncology beds and increased capacity in emergency services, surgery, diagnostic services, outpatient clinics and support areas will be created by the expansion.

“This is such an important project for our community and I am delighted to see it moving along at such an impressive rate,” said MPP Aggelonitis. “We are all looking forward to its completion so we can provide expanded health services in a modern facility for patients across Hamilton.”

Approaching its second spring of construction, the project is more than 28 per cent complete. The exterior shell is finished and much of the construction has moved indoors. Mechanical and electrical installations are well under way and finishes are happening in a number of areas.

The project will provide a sizable boost to the regional and Ontario economies during construction by directly and indirectly supporting and creating approximately 1,300 jobs, many of which will be in the Hamilton area. On average, more than 500 workers are expected on the site daily.

“Redevelopment of Henderson General Hospital is key to ensuring a brighter future for our community,” said Murray Martin, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hamilton Health Sciences. “It's exciting see the rapid progress and know that we're just a year away from opening this remarkable new building to our patients, staff and the community.”

Highlights of the expansion and redevelopment include:

  • oncology, inpatient and ambulatory services
  • intensive care
  • diagnostic imaging
  • operating rooms
  • emergency services
  • outpatients clinic support services
