Hospital Project Attracts Interest

TORONTO - Infrastructure Ontario, The Ottawa Hospital and the Queensway Carleton Hospital have short-listed five companies to build and finance the Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre. The short-listed companies were selected through a request for qualifications process, which began in November 2006.

“We're pleased to see such interest from the construction industry in this project,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “Our government is making much-needed improvements to Ontario's infrastructure at an unprecedented rate. These improvements will be made in a way that ensures value for taxpayers' dollars, as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

“This is a sign of our government's commitment to modernize and expand health care infrastructure to improve access to quality health care,” said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

“Our communities deserve the very best health care we can offer and it is exciting to be moving forward with the expansion of our regional cancer program,” said Jim Watson, MPP, Ottawa West-Nepean and Minister of Health Promotion. “As the member that represents the Queensway Carleton Hospital, I'm looking forward to the completion of the cancer centre site in Ottawa's west end to serve our citizens”

The following companies have been short-listed for this project:

  • EllisDon Corp.
  • M. Sullivan & Son Ltd.
  • PCL Constructors Inc.
  • Pomerleau Inc.
  • R.E. Hein Construction

A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was issued on November 3, 2006. The process identified bid teams with the development, construction and financial capacity required to undertake a project of this size and complexity.

The short-listed teams will be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the project, which is expected to be issued in late spring 2007.

“The Ottawa Hospital is extremely proud that its expertise in the delivery of cancer services will benefit our region as a whole,” said Dr. Jack Kitts, The Ottawa Hospital President and CEO. “With this announcement, we are one step closer to providing a truly regional program.”

“This project is very exciting news for our community,” said Tom Schonberg, QCH President and CEO. “It is the collaborative commitment of the local health partners - The Ottawa Hospital and the Queensway Carleton Hospital - the province and the community that has made this vision for an expanded cancer centre achievable. With today's announcement, we are one step closer to this much needed expansion and enhancement of cancer services, which will help meet the needs of the growing and aging community.”

The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre project is an integrated cancer program that aims to improve cancer treatment by expanding radiation and associated cancer services at two local hospitals.

At The Ottawa Hospital, the project will redevelop and expand the cancer centre and consolidate all eight radiation machines at the General site, enhancing radiation therapy equipment and improving access to treatment.

At the Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) site, a new addition will create space for three new radiation machines, providing Ottawa area patients with greater access to radiation therapy and cancer care at the Regional Cancer Centre.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with The Ottawa Hospital and Queensway Carleton Hospital to redevelop the Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
