Hospital Projects Attract Interest

Infrastructure Ontario and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) have short-listed building teams to build and finance two HHS capital redevelopment projects: Hamilton General Hospital and Henderson General Hospital. The short-listed building teams were selected through a request for qualifications (RFQ) process which began in November 2006.

“We are pleased to see the construction industry's level of interest in these projects,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “Our government is making improvements to Ontario's public infrastructure at an unprecedented rate. These improvements will be made in a way that ensures value for taxpayers' dollars as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

“These projects demonstrate our government's commitment to modernize and expand health care infrastructure and improve access to quality health care,” said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

The RFQ process identified bid teams with the development, construction and financial capacity required to undertake the following projects:

Hamilton General Hospital:

  • Aecon Buildings
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • EllisDon Corporation
  • Vanbots Construction Corporation

Henderson General Hospital:

  • Bondfield Construction Co. Ltd.
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • EllisDon Corporation
  • PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
  • Vanbots Construction Corporation

The short-listed teams for the Hamilton General and the Henderson General Hospitals' main capital redevelopment projects will be invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP), which is expected to be issued in March 2007.

Construction for the Hamilton General and Henderson General Hospitals' is expected to begin in late fall 2007.

“It's exciting to see the progress being made with Hamilton Health Sciences' projects,” said Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister Responsible for Intergovernmental Affairs and Democratic Renewal and MPP for Hamilton Mountain. “The government's commitment to Hamilton-area hospitals is important to everyone in our community.”

“The landscape of healthcare in Hamilton is dramatically changing and it is exciting,” said Murray Martin, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences. “Our community appreciates the provincial government who has understood the need and who has taken action to make this major redevelopment possible.”

The redevelopment at the Hamilton General Hospital includes new construction and renovations to support the consolidation of its current Acquired Brain Injury/Rehabilitation program, which will provide an additional capacity for 44 beds and more efficient ambulatory programs.

The redevelopment at the Henderson General Hospital site includes new construction and renovation that will also provide for a modernized intensive care unit, operating rooms and emergency department, expand inpatient and outpatient services and provide acute care support for the cancer centre.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Hamilton Health Sciences to redevelop the two facilities, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

The projects are guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Hamilton Health Sciences projects are two of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
