TORONTO - Infrastructure Ontario and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton released a request for qualifications (RFQ) today to design, build, finance and maintain a new hospital at the West 5th Street Campus.

The new hospital will provide larger, more modern facilities in order to better support people and families struggling with mental illness and addiction. The campus will also provide diagnostic imaging and medical outpatient services, along with significant research and academic spaces.

The RFQ is the first step in the process to select a team to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility.

RFQ submissions will be reviewed to pre-qualify project teams with the design, construction and facilities management experience, the qualified personnel and the financial strength to deliver a project of this size and complexity. Pre-qualified teams will then be invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP), expected to be released in fall 2009, to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility.

“This is an important milestone for the community and for St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. “This government has made significant investments in health care, and there are now more than 100 new and existing hospitals in various stages of expansion and upgrade across Ontario. The new hospital will enhance the quality of care and the quality of life for patients and their families who rely on this specialized care.”

“The St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton project is an essential part of the government's commitment to renew hospitals,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

“Today's milestone marks another step toward greater access to health care in Hamilton,” said Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain. “By improving health care infrastructure, we are putting the foundation in place for modern service delivery in our hospitals.”

“We are thrilled to reach this important milestone,” said Dr. Kevin Smith, President and CEO, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. “The redevelopment of this campus will result in a healthcare centre that reflects and supports the state-of-the-art, modern mental healthcare our team delivers to the community.”

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton to develop the new hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
