TORONTO - The Women's College Hospital redevelopment project reached a significant milestone today with the release of a request for qualifications (RFQ) to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility.

Women's College Hospital will be a new, state-of-the-art academic ambulatory care facility, constructed on Grenville Street in downtown Toronto. It will consolidate most hospital activities into one location and improve medical services for women. It will be Ontario's first independent academic ambulatory hospital.

The RFQ is the first step in the process to select a team to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility.

“This is an important milestone for the community and for Women's College Hospital,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. “With a commitment of more than $5 billion, we now have more than 100 new and existing hospitals in various stages of expansion and upgrade across Ontario, which represents the biggest investment in health care infrastructure in more than a generation.”

“The Women's College Hospital project is an essential part of the government's commitment to renew hospitals,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “This project will enable excellence in healthcare, research and teaching and will benefit women across Ontario.”

“We are thrilled to reach this important milestone,” said Marilyn Emery, President and CEO, Women's College Hospital. “Our new building will enable us to fulfill our mandate as Ontario's first standalone academic ambulatory hospital, while continuing to champion state-of-the-art healthcare for women and their families.”

RFQ submissions will be reviewed to pre-qualify project teams with the design, construction and facilities management experience, the qualified personnel and the financial strength to deliver a project of this size and complexity. Pre-qualified teams will then be invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP) to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility, which is expected to be released in mid 2009.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Women's College Hospital to develop the new hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
