TORONTO - Windsor Regional Hospital and Infrastructure Ontario announced that today is the deadline for short-listed building teams to submit their proposals to build and finance the hospital's redevelopment project.

The project will increase the hospital's capacity to meet the needs of a growing population, reduce patient wait times and enhance access to services for rehabilitation and longer-term mental health programs.

Highlights of the Windsor Regional Hospital capital redevelopment project include:

  • new construction to provide a longer-term mental health building on the Western Campus that will be more than 75,000-square-feet
  • increase in overall capacity making room for up to 65 longer-term mental health beds and up to 60 rehabilitation beds
  • renovations to more than 35,000 square feet of space in the Tower Building, which houses in-patient rehabilitation services

“This is an exciting step for the Windsor Regional Hospital,” said Sandra Pupatello, Minister of International Trade and Investment and MPP for Windsor West. “This project will increase services and ensure patients have access to the care they need close to home.”

“This project is going to see the creation of construction jobs and economic spin-off that will benefit this entire region,” said Dwight Duncan, Minister of Finance and MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh.

Over the next few months, Windsor Regional Hospital and Infrastructure Ontario will evaluate the bidders' proposals based on criteria set out in the request for proposals (RFP).  The successful bidder is expected to be announced in spring 2009.

“Today's announcement demonstrates our government's commitment to providing the resources and infrastructure that will address the needs of our community,” said Bruce Crozier, MPP for Essex.

“This is such an important milestone for Windsor Regional Hospital and our community,” said David Musyj, President and CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital.  "Today we are taking another step toward reaching our Vision of Outstanding Care - No Exceptions!"

Infrastructure Ontario and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Windsor Regional Hospital to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
