Government's Investment Will Help to Improve Services

TORONTO - The request for proposals (RFP) stage for pre-qualified building teams to submit bids to build and finance The Credit Valley Hospital's Phase II Expansion and Redevelopment Project will close today.  This is one of the final stages in the competitive procurement process before construction begins.

The Phase II Expansion and Redevelopment project will expand the hospital through new construction and renovations increasing bed capacity with room for additional growth.  Labour and delivery room capacity will expand and the number of bassinettes for specialized neonatal care will increase by 40 per cent.

A new high-dose rate radiation therapy suite and resources for expanded cancer care and treatments, including 20 new surgical oncology beds, will be included in the redevelopment project. In addition, an expanded laboratory will provide more in-house support for diagnostics.

“Through ReNew Ontario, the government's $30-billion plus infrastructure investment plan, we are renewing and modernizing infrastructure,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “This plan ensures value for taxpayer dollars as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

“These projects are an essential part of our government's plan to renew hospitals and lower emergency room wait times in the local community and across the province,” commented Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, George Smitherman. “Once complete, this redeveloped hospital will improve access to important health services so that Mississauga residents will get the care they need, when they need it.”

The request for proposals (RFP) to build and finance The Credit Valley Hospital's Phase II Expansion and Redevelopment project was issued on July 26, 2007. The bids will be evaluated over the next few months and a successful bidder is expected to be named in early 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly after.

“By increasing services, patients will have better access to the care they need close to home in comfortable surroundings,” said Mississauga Streetsville MPP Bob Delaney. "The expansion and redevelopment will enable the hospital to better cope with the 'triple challenge' of an aging population, high growth, and immigration."

“We are encouraged to see government's continued support and commitment,” said The Credit Valley Hospital president and CEO, Wayne Fyffe.  “We are at one of the final steps to meet our goal of providing our patients and their families with better access to care and shorter wait times in our emergency department.”

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with The Credit Valley Hospital to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.
