Short-listed Construction Teams Invited To Bid

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) reached another key milestone with the release of a request for proposals (RFP) to build and finance the redevelopment of two Hamilton Health Sciences sites: Hamilton General Hospital and Henderson General Hospital.

The redevelopment of the Hamilton General Hospital will include new construction and renovations of the facilities to support the consolidation of its current Acquired Brain Injury/Rehabilitation program, which will provide an additional capacity for 44 beds and increase the efficiency of ambulatory programs.

The redevelopment of the Henderson General Hospital site will include new construction and renovations of the facilities that will also provide for a modernized intensive care unit, operating rooms and Emergency Department, expand inpatient and outpatient services and provide acute care support for the cancer centre.

“Today's call for construction teams brings Hamilton and surrounding communities one step closer to having larger facilities with a wider range of health care services,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “We are pleased to see the high level of interest in these projects from the development industry.”

“This project is an essential part of the McGuinty government's plan to modernize hospitals, reduce wait times and upgrade medical equipment in the local community and across the province,” commented George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

The following short-listed companies are being invited to respond to the RFP:

Hamilton General Hospital:

  • Aecon Buildings
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • EllisDon Corporation
  • Vanbots Construction Corporation

Henderson General Hospital:

  • Bondfield Construction Co. Ltd.
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • EllisDon Corporation
  • PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
  • Vanbots Construction Corporation

These companies were short-listed for their development, construction and financial capacity to undertake a project of this size and complexity.

“The Hamilton Health Sciences' projects will bring welcome improvements to health care services for Hamilton's residents,” said Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister Responsible for Intergovernmental Affairs and Democratic Renewal and MPP for Hamilton Mountain. “Today's announcement demonstrates our government's commitment to providing the resources and infrastructure that will address the health care needs of our growing community."

“Our patients and their families deserve modern hospitals with the programs, equipment and expertise needed for them to receive life-saving health care,” said Murray Martin, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences. “With the support of the government, we've made an important step in this direction.”

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Hamilton Health Sciences to redevelop the two facilities, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

The projects are guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Hamilton Health Sciences projects are two of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
