Loan Client: Owen Sound

Situated on the southern shores of Georgian Bay, Owen Sound is the largest urban community in all of the Grey and Bruce Counties. A vibrant community with a population of over 21,000, Owen Sound is characterized by its stunning harbor, and its winding rivers and parks.

Owen SoundSimilar to many other cities across Ontario, Owen Sound was beginning to encounter the challenges of replacing aging infrastructure within their community.  City roads, water mains, the community centre and a local park were identified as priority areas in need of repair or upgrade.

With infrastructure needs within the community continuing to grow, the city turned to Infrastructure Ontario for an affordable long-term loan to help finance its many projects. Owen Sound was able to secure a $1.4 million loan from Infrastructure Ontario to cover the entire cost of all the projects.

With the help of Infrastructure Ontario’s Loan Program, the city was able to replace old water mains and completed much needed renovations and upgrades to water treatment facilities.  They also completed road repairs and reconstruction to help provide open access to the waterfront.

“Infrastructure Ontario provides municipalities with a viable option for financing infrastructure works.  Their staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very aware of the needs that small and medium sized municipalities have for financing relatively large capital works.”

Wayne Ritchie C.G.A., Director of Financial Services - City of Owen Sound

The community’s recreation infrastructure also received a face lift. The Bay Shore Community Centre was able to replace a broken chiller, upgrade the upper concourse and expand the parking lot to better handle traffic flow during hockey games and events. The Harrison Park picnic shelter was also furnished with a new roof.

With these upgrades to the community’s clean water, municipal roads and recreation infrastructure complete, both residents and visitors are able to enjoy the many benefits of safer roads, quality indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and safe and reliable access to water.
