Construction reaches one year milestone

Michael Chan, MPP for Markham-Unionville, and Dr. Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges-Markham, joined hospital officials, community members, fundraising volunteers and health-care partners today to mark the one year anniversary of the start of construction on the Markham Stouffville Hospital's redevelopment project.

Entering its second year of construction, the new building is almost 50 per cent complete and progressing on budget. It is scheduled for completion in early 2013.

The project is helping to strengthen the regional economy by supporting and creating jobs. At the peak of construction activity, approximately 300 workers are expected to be on site daily, with 25 to 40 per cent of the workforce coming from the Region of York. When the project is finished the expanded hospital is expected to employ an additional 875 staff and is expected to attract 60 new physicians to the area.

The first year of construction included many noteworthy accomplishments, including:

  • the completion of the concrete structure for the new building;
  • the installation of rooftop mechanical units and structural steel penthouse;
  • the closing-in of Level 1 and the start of interior partitions; and
  • the installation of utility services and new roads and parking areas.

The redevelopment will allow Markham Stouffville Hospital to meet the needs of a growing population and enhance access to essential health-care services through the construction of a four-storey addition that will add 385,000 square feet to the existing site, doubling the size of the facility. After the new building is complete, renovations will then be completed on areas in the existing building that are vacated as a result of programs moving into the new wing.

Business and community leaders have pledged their support to the expansion campaign and the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation is at 70 per cent of their $50 million fundraising goal.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will work with Markham Stouffville Hospital to manage the renovation and new construction at the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
