Infrastructure Ontario and Hamilton Health Sciences announced that EllisDon Corporation have achieved financial close, which signals that all contractual steps have been completed for Hamilton General Hospital's redevelopment project.

The redevelopment project at Hamilton General Hospital will consolidate the current Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation services from 14 different buildings to one site. The new regional rehabilitation centre will have space for an additional 44 beds and more efficient ambulatory programs.

The new, three-storey, 100,000 square-foot building will be constructed to accommodate all ambulatory and outreach services, a therapy pool on the ground floor and 91 inpatient beds on the two floors above.

The building team, led by EllisDon Corporation, includes financing arranged by CIBC and Pacific & Western Bank of Canada.

The deal commits EllisDon Corporation to build and finance the hospital expansion and redevelopment project for $44.9 million, which will be paid only when construction is completed. At the peak of construction, there will be more than 130 workers on site daily.

The estimated total cost of the hospital's redevelopment project is $60.3 million. This includes the fixed construction contract with EllisDon Corporation as well as other estimated costs related to the project such as furniture, equipment, permits, architectural and engineering fees, transactional and project management fees. It does not include the cost of site preparation work completed by the hospital.

EllisDon Corporation will begin to mobilize for construction today and construction is expected to be completed in spring 2009.
