Hamilton Health Sciences has begun site preparation work at its Henderson General Hospital to prepare for its main construction project said Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, MPP Hamilton Mountain, on behalf of Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman.

The site preparation work will include demolition of the 70 Wing South to make room for a 400,000 square-foot addition. The new addition will help to improve health care services at the hospital by expanding inpatient and outpatient services; modernizing the intensive care unit, operating rooms and emergency department; and providing acute care support for the cancer centre.

The hospital's main entrance, located on Concession Street, has been relocated to between the Henderson General Hospital's Emergency Department and the Juravinski Cancer Centre during the site preparation and main project construction. As well, the public parking lot located on Upper Sherman Avenue, is permanently closed to make room for the addition. Public parking is available in the public lot on Concession Street.

“Hamilton Health Sciences plays a vital role in our community's well-being and we are pleased to see the first steps of a larger provincial investment in our health care infrastructure,” said Bountrogianni. “Once the major redevelopment is completed, the Henderson General Hospital site will provide increased service delivery for patients who deserve the very best facilities we can offer.”

“This marks another milestone in the development of Hamilton Health Sciences,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “The hospital is one of many projects in the McGuinty government's five-year $30-billion plus infrastructure renewal plan to modernize infrastructure and ensure value for taxpayer dollars as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

“Our government is fulfilling its promise to upgrade and modernize hospitals. We are committed to delivering on our goal to keep Ontarians healthy and get them the care they need when they are sick,” said Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman.

“Redevelopment will help us to provide improved services and better access to health care for our patients,” said President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences, Murray Martin. “The site preparation brings us one step closer to the start of the main construction project and the improvements redevelopment will bring to the community.”

The main construction project is expected to begin in late 2007.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Hamilton Health Sciences to redevelop the Henderson General Hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects -- ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

The projects are guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Hamilton Health Sciences project at the Henderson site is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
