MISSISSAUGA - At a groundbreaking ceremony held today, the Honourable Reza Moridi, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, joined Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, Sheridan College President and CEO Dr. Jeff Zabudsky and other college officials and business leaders to celebrate the start of construction of the Sheridan College Hazel McCallion Campus (HMC) expansion project.

The 220,000 square-foot state-of-the-art building will be built at the corner of Duke of York Boulevard and Rathburn Road West in Mississauga. The new building will expand campus capacity to accommodate an additional 3,200 full-time students for a total of 5,500 students.

Highlights of the expansion project include space for faculty and administrative offices, 29 new classrooms, 28 new studios, labs and production spaces, and a creative campus complex that consists of:

  • A central learning and collaborative meeting space known as the Creativity Commons.
  • Research and leadership centres such as the Institute for Creativity.
  • A gallery space to showcase student creativity and innovation.

The HMC expansion is a design, build and finance project led by Sheridan Creative Partnership, a team comprised of Bondfield Construction Company Limited, Moriyama & Teshima Architects/Montgomery Sisam Architects and Rocklynn Capital Inc. The selection of the team is the result of an open, fair and competitive procurement process that began in January 2013.

The contract between Sheridan Creative Partnership and Sheridan College is for $67.3 million. Payment will be made by the Province and Sheridan College at substantial completion in summer 2016 to ensure the project is delivered on-time and on-budget.

The project will create employment in the construction sector, with approximately 120 workers expected on site each day at the peak of activity.

The project will deliver design excellence and sustainability. The new HMC building will be designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification.
