Cancer care in the Champlain Regional Cancer Program is delivered through a network of service providers with its hub at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. Currently, The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre operates mainly from two campuses: The Ottawa Hospital's General Campus, located in Ottawa's east end, and The Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus, located in Ottawa's west end.
In 2002 Cancer Care Ontario and The Ottawa Hospital conducted a review to ensure the hospital's regional program would be positioned to meet the demands it would face in the future and address the shortage of space at the existing facilities. Because the Civic Campus presents a variety of significant facility development and expansion challenges, the decision was made to consolidate all cancer services of The Ottawa Hospital at the General Campus and introduce a satellite site at Queensway Carleton Hospital. These two hospitals will provide cancer services for the entire region.
The goal of this integrated cancer program is to bring together programs in:
- systemic therapy (chemotherapy),
- radiation therapy,
- surgical oncology,
- preventative oncology, and
- palliative medicine and supportive care.
The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program will serve a total population of approximately 1.5 million in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.
The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program Project
The Queensway Carleton Hospital project includes:
- new construction of a four-storey, 85,000 square foot building that will house three radiation treatment machines;
- two clinics and 33 chemotherapy spaces; and
- a parking garage.
The Ottawa Hospital General Campus project includes:
- renovation and expansion of the existing Cancer Centre to consolidate The Ottawa Hospital's cancer services at the General Campus;
- capacity for eight radiation treatment machines and one standby machine;
- additional space to offer a total capacity for four clinics and 50 chemotherapy spaces; and
- a research laboratory and two floors of shelled in space for future expansion.
Project Highlights:
- space for additional radiation machines for the region;
- both sites will gain additional space for outpatient clinics, systemic therapy (chemotherapy) and supportive therapy;
- the décor and ambience of the ambulatory cancer facilities will be relaxing, comfortable and to the greatest extent possible non-institutional in appearance;
- special features will include supportive care elements, and the character of the region
Construction for the two-site cancer project began in January 2008.
The cancer centre at The Ottawa Hospital's General Campus was officially opened in November 2009. Renovation and expansion of the existing cancer centre will now commence and is expected to be substantially complete in the summer of 2011.
The new Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital was officially opened in January 2010.
