TORONTO - The Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene (MHCP) redevelopment project continues to move forward with the selection of Stantec Architecture Ltd. to provide the planning, design and compliance aspects of the project.
The new hospital will be a state-of-the-art forensic mental health care facility, providing a secure environment for offenders with mental health disorders, while respecting their dignity. The expanded hospital will replace the existing 160-bed Oak Ridge Facility and be the first step in consolidating MHCP into a more efficient, integrated building complex.
The compliance design team will further develop the Site Master Plan and prepare key documents to form the guidelines and performance requirements that the successful building team must work with when preparing the overall design.
“With a commitment of more than $5 billion, we now have more than 100 new and existing hospitals in various stages of expansion and upgrade across Ontario, which represents the biggest investment in health care infrastructure in more than a generation,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. “The Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene project will create jobs and spur economic development that will benefit everyone in the region.”

It's one of my top priorities. And this redeveloped hospital will improve access to quality mental heath care.”
Once the planning, design and compliance aspects are completed, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario will issue a request for qualifications for a company to design, build, finance and maintain the redevelopment project. This project will be delivered using the Alternative Financing and Procurement model. Under this model, risks associated with the design, construction and financing of complex hospital projects are transferred to the private sector.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene to build the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
